Recently travelled quite frequent on some low cost carriers, so called budget airlines. Here are my thoughts....
No service, no smiling faces from the crew, no in-flight entertainment, no food, no drinks, no newspaper or magazines, no wet towel, not even a piece of tissue.....if you really keen on getting those things, pay for it. Pay SGD3.00 for a 250ml bottle of water, SGD4.00 for a pack of Kit Kat or SGD15.00 for a Cup Noodle. Travelling in the crappy LCC terminal give me a feeling that I am actually rushing to the bus terminal in the 3rd world country. Be honest, you are simply travelling no more than on a public 200-seater flying bus with a tuck shop onboard.
The reason I hate budget airlines so much is becoz they are really BUDGET minded. They work their pilots like a dog and only pay them peanuts. They are simply driving the whole industry's pay scale down and screw our full-service airlines packages. Budget pilots not only paid for their flight training, but they also have to bring their lunch or dinner and a bottle of water themselves when on duty, pay for their own uniform and peak caps, even their chest wings.
In fact nowaday, CX SQ QF and other major airlines pilots salary dive like hell compare to our good old days. Work almost twice harder and pay the same amount of money to the year 2000 standard. We lost our pride and status as a pilot compare to 10-15 years ago, and we can really call ourselves bus driver when someone ask what we are doing for living.
If you think being a pilot will earn a fortune, you are wrong, we are earning peanuts and barely survive. If you think being a pilot will have many off days to enjoy life, you are very wrong, we may only having minimum days off and no normal weekends or public holidays. If you think being a pilot can pick up those pretty cabin crew easily, you are definitely very very wrong, they may earn more than you do and can easily find other more decent guys than you and me.
Well, what is left being a PROFESSIONAL pilot??? Joy of flying I guess.....only if you really enjoy pushing buttons as flying the aircraft.
